1/29
I’ve got to admit, I’m getting a real soft spot for Roller Derby. It’s been a year since I last shot a bout, and I was pleased to see some faces I recognised.
First up, Screaming Assault Sirens took on The D’viants, then Team Unicorn: The Horny Rollers clashed with the Beauty School Knockouts.
What amazes me about Roller Derby is the ferocity of the jams (the “sets,” if you like), mixed with apparent genuine respect and support from the players, for the players on the opposing team. These girls play hard (and things get quite heated) but I’ve never seen any fighting.
It makes me wonder if this sport would work if it was played by guys. I don’t think it would. Somehow, for me, that makes the game even better. It’s not about “empowerment,” although that’s certainly a factor. I think says more about the determination and strength of women. A determination and strength that isn’t mindless and blinkered, but rather, focused and aware.
I was able to shoot from the catwalk of the Hordern, which meant I had the best view in the house! I wished I’d taken my usual two cameras, though. Thinking access to the catwalk would be difficult enough with one, I’d left the other one at home. I’d forgotten how annoying changing lenses at exactly the wrong moment can be!
What a great night. Thanks to everyone involved for making it such an exciting evening.
