I didn’t know much about 30 Seconds to Mars. I only found out a couple of days ago that the lead singer was the “I wanted to destroy something beautiful” guy from Fight Club. I wonder if his acting background contributes to his showmanship? His costume and presence seem pretty strongly influenced by Lady Gaga – the studded shoulders and tail seem pretty Gaga to me.
I was only there for the first three songs but the crowd was insanely fired up, even before the band started; cheering and screaming for an anonymous torch-holder, high up on the catwalk.
The lighting made for some tricky shooting, there was a lot of fog and not a lot of front-lighting. Often there was too much light on the (uninteresting) set itself, with none on the performers. Occasionally though, the stars aligned – with light hitting the smoke and the guys just right, dissolving the set into the background for some dramatic moments.
Watch out for the runaway drumstick in #12… it could have an eye out.
